Music & Your WOD

I regularly attend the 9:30am class and if you ask Coach Mig she will tell you, I am highly annoying when it comes to music. I like a fast beat, volume up, and no break between the songs.  On the other hand, there are people that like to workout with lower tempo or no music at all.

Is one right or wrong?  Nope.  Let’s talk about why you should be able to train in both.

WORKING OUT WITHOUT MUSIC:

Here are some things you can consider when you’re exercising without music:

  • Listen to your breathing: Focus on your rhythm and practice your ability to control your breathing to match your desired level of exertion.
  • Focus on your body:  No music means that you can use all of your mental energy to think about your movement.  Move well, move efficiently.
  • Appreciate your environment:  Give your brain a chance to be alone with its own thoughts.  When was the last time you did that?

This is tough work… use the time and silence to get better and tune in to yourself.

WORKING OUT WITH MUSIC:

  • Use it to keep your heart rate and tempo up: Use the beat and get after it.
  • Motivation:  Sometimes the lyrics hit just right! Use them as a motivational tool to get you through the tough times.
  • Have fun:  Music is fun! Use the music to help you enjoy you training more.
  • Distraction:  This can be both good and bad.  It can distract you from you suffering but it can also throw off your mind… if you are a competitor, chances are you will be blasted with music and noise at your next competition.  Can you focus through it?

I am sure you have your preference and there is no definitive right or wrong.  Music is a tool!  YOU CHOOSE HOW YOU USE IT.
